In the void, there is no distinction of east and west." Gwen blinked slightly at that. "I know all of those words, and yet when strung together like that I have no idea what they mean.

About This Quote

The words in the quote above are in Mandarin Chinese. They are taken from an ancient Chinese poem called "The Withering of the Leaves." The poem dates back to around 200 BC or earlier, and was written by a man named Qu Yuan. His message was simple: "In the void there is no distinction of east and west." (To understand why he said that, you need to know that every year in China, people would make a huge display of autumn colors. The purpose was to celebrate the end of one season and the beginning of another, but it also served as a way to welcome in the new year.) The reason he said this was because he saw that different tribes were being oppressed by other tribes. He wanted to point out to them how all of the people should have the same love for their country. Then he died.

He was so upset about all of this that he killed himself. There are two references to Qu Yuan in the Bible, both found in Isaiah 26 . He drowned himself in a river because he couldn't live with all of these problems anymore. He was so upset that he just couldn't be bothered anymore. The second reference is in Psalms 90 .

This time, it's about how God loves everyone even though they're all different from each other. It's what makes Him so great because He doesn't care if you're rich or poor, black or white, young or old - God loves you all!
